SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 30, 2009) -- Student-athletes from twelve different institutions in The Commonwealth Coast Conference were represented on the 2009 All-TCCC Baseball Team, it was announced today by Commissioner Gregg M. Kaye. In addition to the all-conference team, winners of five major individual awards and the team sportsmanship award were also selected. Curry College junior Rick Vail was selected TCCC Player of the Year, Wentworth Institute of Technology junior Chris Sandini was named TCCC Pitcher of the Year, Western New England College freshman Matt Fleishman was chosen TCCC Rookie of the Year, Western New England College’s Bryan Calzone was honored as TCCC Senior Scholar Athlete of the Year, Curry College’s Dave Perdios selected as TCCC Coach of the Year, and New England College was the recipient of the Team Sportsmanship Award. Voting for the All-TCCC team and each of the major awards was conducted among TCCC baseball coaches.
Joining Vail (first base), Fleishman (designated hitter), and pitchers Calzone and Sandini on the first team were catcher Brad Hawn (Curry), second baseman Andrew Fatse (Western New England), third baseman Tony Trubia (Western New England), shortstop Grant Bolin (Roger Williams), outfielders Jesse Bruinsma (Curry), Chris Newell (Western New England), and Tom White (Colby-Sawyer).
Second team selections included catcher Jeff Kodys (Anna Maria), first baseman Alex Perry (Roger Williams), second baseman Chris Gaeta (Colby-Sawyer), third baseman Stephen Myhren (Gordon), shortstop Justin Walz (Western New England), outfielders Justin Collett (Salve Regina), James Geosits (Curry), Tim Sweeney (Curry), designated hitter Tony Luciani (Curry), and pitchers Cory Collins (Curry) and James Page (Curry).
Receiving honorable mention were catcher Joe Klein (Endicott), first baseman Joe Griglun (Western New England), second baseman David Stevens (Curry), third baseman Ralph Renzulli (Curry), shortstop Stephen Kefelas (Gordon), outfielders Jamie Dahill (Roger Williams), Mike Russo (Endicott), Aaron Santos (Endicott), and Victor Torres (Eastern Nazarene), pitchers Brian Hurld (Roger Williams), Steve Oehlschlaeger (Eastern Nazarene), and Tim Smith (Nichols).
Vail, a junior first baseman from Lynnfield, Mass., is a potent part of a Curry lineup that completed the regular season leading the TCCC in batting average, runs scored and home runs in conference-only play. In TCCC play, Vail concluded the regular season ranked at or near the top of numerous statistical categories including batting average (3rd, .446,) slugging percentage (1st, .785), on-base percentage (2nd, .530), home runs (1st, 6), and total bases (2nd, 51). In all games played entering TCCC tournament play, Vail is batting .463 with nine home runs and 29 RBI.
Sandini, a junior from Upton, Mass., has been a standout at the front of the Leopard rotation throughout his career at Wentworth. Entering the TCCC tournament, Sandini ranks at or near the top of all major individual statistical categories during conference-only play. He concluded the regular season tied for the conference lead with five wins, ranked second with 58 strikeouts in a league-high 39 innings pitched, and stood fourth with a 1.62 ERA. In all games pitched entering TCCC tournament play, Sandini compiled a 6-2 record with a 2.09 ERA and 83 strikeouts in 56 innings of work.
Fleishman, a freshman from East Northport, N.Y., has played a significant role for Western New England during his rookie campaign. Entering TCCC tournament play, Fleishman is batting .348 with a team-high five home runs and 31 RBI. In conference play during the regular-season, Fleishman ranked 10th with a .400 batting average, third with a .708 slugging percentage, tied for fourth with four home runs and tied for ninth with 21 RBI.
Calzone, a senior from Bethel, Conn., is standout both on the mound and in the classroom. As a pitcher, Calzone posted an impressive 4-1 record with a 1.95 ERA during TCCC play, ranking fourth in wins and fifth in ERA. Academically, Calzone sports a 3.48 GPA as a criminal justice major. He is also a member of Chi Alpha Sigma National Student Athlete Honor Society.
In his 11th season at Curry, Perdios guided his Colonels to a 30-5 overall record, including a sparkling 21-1 mark in conference play, entering the TCCC tournament. Curry’s 30 victories entering the conference tournament eclipsed the program record for wins in a season that was set just one year ago. In TCCC regular-season conference play, Curry led all TCCC offenses with a .370 batting average and 201 runs scored, while ranking fourth in pitching with a 4.26 staff ERA. The 2009 Coach of the Year award marks the third time in five years that he has been so honored.
