SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Make it a six in a row for the Western New England College men’s soccer team.
Senior goalkeeper Kyle Bak (Cumberland, RI) registered his 11th shutout of the season as top-seeded Western New England College defeated third-seeded Wentworth 4-0 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) Tournament title match Saturday (Nov. 7) at Suprenant Field before 225 fans.
The Golden Bear receive an automatic invitation to the NCAA Division III Tournament for the sixth straight year after capturing their third straight conference crown after joining the league in 2007.
Senior forward Jay Sabia (Poughkeepsie, NY) ignited the Golden Bears’ offense in the 25th minute with his sixth goal of the season. Sophomore forward John Rusin (Chicopee, MA) had the assist.
In the 43rd minute, freshman midfielder Shawn DaCruz (Ludlow, MA) fought off multiple Wentworth defenders and connected with junior forward John Parsons (Sunderland, MA) who made it 2-0 before the half.
Sophomore midfielder Corey Howard (Hopedale, MA) put in the third score on a kick from 30-yards out in the 55th minute and junior forward Kienan Garn (Lake Huntington, NY) recorded his first goal of the season in the 75th minute.
Western New England College totaled 24 shots in the match while Wentworth had six.
Junior goalie Brian Pearsall (Sanford, ME) compiled 10 saves in a strong effort for Wentworth who finishes the season at 12-8.
Western New England College (15-5-3) is currently tied in 10th with Middlebury in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division III New England poll.
